the sexual condition

August 1st, 2007 by Neal

[don't gasp]

We’re finding out as a culture that all of our sexual ‘liberty’ is not necessarily making us happier or more progressive. Turns out we’re just getting more distant, less satisfied, and more depressed.

Men less hungry for real sex due to pr0n.
“Not Tonight, Honey. I’m Logging On.”

What better argument can you make? God knew what he was doing when he set up the moral principles we know and [as a society] seem to despise occassionally.

On the slightly more humorous side, Smarter kids do it less. If I remember right, it’s these kids who wish they were dumb enough to indulge. Or, again proof of the Idiocracy principle.

Fifth Element – there are many of us

Korben clank

I would venture to say that Luc Besson has made some of the best and most underappreciate films. But, they may not be that underappreciated. And I haven’t liked some of his later films.

However, Fifth Element is a classic.

And here’s all the reasons why.

new camera

July 9th, 2007 by Neal

I recently decided to spend some money and get a psuedo-amateur-pro camera, or a DSLR. So I got the Nikon D40. I am pleased. And I ordered before the stupid ‘we gave the d40 to a tiny town in somewhere’ commercials, so I’m still cool and didn’t buy any hype. pff

So now I’m off taking pictures. A few friends of mine will probably start a small psuedo-club and go take pictures from time to time. I’ve been nominated honorary Asian as well. Hoowah.

Laptop batteries

April 4th, 2007 by Neal

It’s the preverbial bottom of the ninth. It’s crunch time. The fate of the world rests on your shoulders. They are counting on you. You can make your move, leave your mark, or let everyone down. You stand. You rise to the occassion. You seethe confidence. You reach out your arm. You pause for effect. You watch as your most important resource, your laptop, begins it’s crucial task. And then you watch in horror as the low battery notice informs you of the impending disaster. You rush to plug the adapter into the wall, but you are too late. Too late indeed. The laptop has died. And you fail

My laptop battery has been dying on me recently after about 45 minutes. The thing is that it’s an ‘extended’ battery, and should get 4 to 5 hours of computing time before it dies. Unfortunately, this is because the battery is developing a ‘memory’ due to repeated charging. I rarely use the laptop without plugging it in, so the battery never gets a full workout.

So I decided it was time to run it down. But the laptop’s power management shut it down before the battery is actually gone. So we need to fake it.

Wiring stuff
Rig #1 at work: 2 paper clips, an old tape recorder, and a salt shaker for weight. Assemble and enjoy. Ran my tape player for 2 hrs.

wiring stuff #2
Rig #2 at home: 3 motors, clip leads, 2 paper clips. The big motor drew a lot of power, sparking every time I’d connect it. But it ran really fast and started getting warm. So I stuck with the two smaller motors which had their own regulators. This ran overnight and still had 12V on the battery.

So I’m at around 7 hrs of motor run time. And still going. I knew this battery had some life left.

Vista

February 7th, 2007 by Neal

Vista DVDSo far, reviews of Vista are mixed. It is doubtful that I will bother upgrading for a long while, and then I may use Linux. To add to my previous comments, Vista can almost be a reason to go mac as well. It’s too bad they don’t sell their OS for PC. However, it is nice that the OEM version stays below $200.

Reasons to get a Mac:

Macintosh propaganda is blatant and unrelenting. In the vein of sarcastic counter-comments, I am going to go over the list of reasons to switch, and then react. Observe. This list is from the anti-vista website at apple.

Ungique

November 13th, 2006 by Neal

New word:

UNGIQUE [YUNE-geek]

Still searching for the best definition. Potentials so far are:

  1. adj. A uniquely geeky in a positive way. “There is something particularly ungique about the way Frank can reconfigure his make files with only the numberpad.”
  2. adj. Strongly unique, or unique in a particularly way related to inner strength.

Thanks to Munsey for ‘creating’ this word.

Another word in progress, thanks to my sis:

LOUNDLY [laowndly]

Still looking for the definition there too.

Pedal your way to level 60

October 9th, 2006 by Neal

So this is an invention that I thought of in times past. It had run across my mind as I wondered how one could work at a job like mine and somehow stay fit. I’m enthralled that they’ve now implemented it, but probably won’t buy one anyway.
